Patna: In a significant move towards inclusive development, the Bihar government will provide permanent housing to 1,308 families belonging to Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) across 10 districts under the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyay Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN).
Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary said on June 10 that the initiative marks a major step towards social justice and the upliftment of marginalised tribal communities. He described the effort as a symbol of the double engine government’s commitment to strengthening the socio-economic fabric of Bihar.
The scheme, officially extended to Bihar by the Ministry of Rural Development on April 29, will benefit families from nine tribal groups — Asur, Birhor, Birjia, Hilkharia, Korwa, Malpahadia, Parhaiya, Sauriyapahadia and Sawar — in Banka, Kaimur (Bhabua), Bhagalpur, Gaya, Katihar, Kishanganj, Madhepura, Nawada, Purnia and Supaul districts.
Under PM-JANMAN, eligible families will receive Rs 2 lakh in four equal installments for housing construction, an increase from the Rs 1.20 lakh earlier provided under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Rural). The first installment of Rs 50,000 will be released after the housing approval, followed by successive payments upon reaching key construction milestones — the plinth, lintel, and roofing levels.
Additionally, each household will receive approximately Rs 27,000 under MNREGA for labour and Rs 12,000 through the Swachh Bharat Mission for building a toilet, bringing the total support to Rs 2.39 lakh per family.
Only families without existing permanent homes and without any member employed in government service will be eligible. A survey is currently underway to identify beneficiaries. Once verified, families will be registered on the “Awas” portal. The funding pattern for the scheme follows a 60:40 cost-sharing ratio between the central and state governments.
