First Red Alert Heat Wave Hits Bihar: 14 Districts, Including Patna, Sizzle as Sheikhpura Records 44 Degrees

Patna: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has raised alarm bells as Bihar braces for a scorching heat wave, with a red alert issued for several districts in the region. This marks the first red alert of the season, indicating the severity of the impending heat wave.

According to IMD reports, districts including East Champaran, Gopalganj, Nawada, Khagaria, and Bhagalpur are set to experience extreme heat on Tuesday, with the alert extended to other districts in the form of a yellow warning. Furthermore, the situation is expected to exacerbate on May 1, with East Champaran, Gopalganj, Nawada, and Sheikhpura under a red alert.

SK Patel, a scientist at IMD, underscored the gravity of the situation, forecasting severe heat for the next three days, potentially leading to a heat wave. The severity of the conditions became evident on Monday when Patna, along with 31 other districts, recorded temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, with 14 districts, including Patna, engulfed by a heat wave.

In response to the escalating heat, the IMD has extended the red alert from April 30 to May 3, cautioning residents to brace themselves for soaring temperatures. Authorities have also initiated preventive measures, placing medical colleges and health centers on high alert.

The State Health Society has issued directives to all civil surgeons and medical officers, urging them to bolster healthcare infrastructure in preparation for the heat wave. Hospitals have been instructed to ensure adequate stocks of medicines, dedicated wards, and the presence of paramedical staff and specialist doctors, along with ambulance facilities and testing capabilities.

As Bihar braces for the onslaught of extreme heat, residents are advised to take necessary precautions to mitigate the risks associated with the impending heat wave.
