Patna Metro to Implement Platform Screen Doors for Enhanced Safety

Patna: The Patna Metro Rail Project is set to introduce Platform Screen Doors (PSDs) in its trains, aiming to enhance safety and efficiency at metro stations. This innovative system will feature half-height PSDs at elevated stations and full-height PSDs at underground stations, promising a cost-effective solution to improve passenger security.

Platform Screen Doors (PSDs) are barriers that separate platforms from the tracks, opening only when a train stops at the designated position. These doors, synchronized with the train doors, help to prevent accidents, deter objects from falling onto the tracks, and reduce trespassing incidents.

The installation of PSDs offers multiple advantages. Acting as physical barriers, PSDs prevent passengers from falling onto the tracks, thereby significantly reducing the risk of accidents. By managing the flow of passengers during peak hours, PSDs enhance crowd control and platform safety. The barriers allow passengers to stand safely closer to the edge without the risk of falling onto the tracks. Additionally, the entry speed of trains can be increased, leading to better efficiency and reduced wait times. PSDs also contribute to improved air-conditioning efficiency at underground stations, saving significant energy costs. Furthermore, the system includes features like obstacle detection during boarding and deboarding, automatic sliding doors, emergency exit doors, and platform end doors, ensuring comprehensive safety for passengers.

For elevated stations, half-height PSDs (1.5 meters) are recommended, while underground stations will feature full-height PSDs (2.15 meters). These barriers isolate the tracks from passenger areas, a crucial requirement for upgrading to Unattended Train Operation (UTO).

The PSD system is equipped with advanced safety features, including Automatic Sliding Doors (ASD), Emergency Exit Doors (EED), Platform End Doors (PED), and various emergency escape mechanisms. It also includes a Platform Supervisory Booth, Alarm Terminal, and HMI (Information Device for Drivers) to ensure comprehensive passenger safety.

With these enhancements, the Patna Metro Rail Project aims to provide a safer and more efficient travel experience for its commuters, setting a new standard in urban transit safety.
