Patna: The southwest monsoon is expected to arrive in Bihar with strong intensity this year, bringing rainfall above the long-period average (LPA), according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The latest long-range forecast released by the Meteorological Centre, Patna, on Wednesday, suggests that Bihar will receive 111% of its average monsoon rainfall during the June–September season.

The IMD’s updated projection indicates that the 2025 monsoon season will be favourable across the country, with total rainfall forecast at around 106% of the LPA. For Bihar, the outlook is even more optimistic, with predictions of higher-than-normal rainfall expected to benefit both agriculture and water resource management in the state.

The department has also forecast above-normal rainfall for June, hinting at an active and timely onset of the monsoon in Bihar. This is seen as a positive sign for the timely start of agricultural activities and improved availability of water resources, especially for rain-fed farming.

The IMD’s forecast is based on its Multi-Model Ensemble (MME) prediction system, which integrates various models to produce more reliable seasonal forecasts. The enhanced rainfall forecast is particularly significant for Bihar, where a large section of the rural economy depends on timely and adequate monsoon rains.

Agricultural planners and farmers are being advised to prepare accordingly, as the favourable monsoon conditions are likely to enhance crop prospects and reduce the risk of drought-related setbacks.
