Patna: An action plan to bring back sparrows, the state bird of Bihar, was submitted to the Department of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change on Saturday. The plan was prepared by sparrow expert Sanjay Kumar at the request of Satyajit Kumar, Conservator of Forests, Wildlife Zone, Patna. Environmental activists Nishant Ranjan, Amit Pandey, and Digvijay Singh from the group Environment Warriors contributed to the report.
Satyajit Kumar stated that this initiative was inspired by Minister Prem Kumar, who has been a consistent advocate for sparrow conservation. The plan focuses on encouraging the return of sparrows to urban and rural areas, particularly to households where they were once a common sight. Initially, the campaign will be launched in Patna, with plans to expand it to other districts of Bihar.
The action plan includes practical steps such as providing food and water for sparrows in every household, installing artificial nests, planting trees, and fostering awareness about the importance of sparrow conservation. Sanjay Kumar emphasised that the plan draws from his experience with similar initiatives and aims to revive the bond between sparrows and human settlements.
This effort is part of a broader initiative to protect Bihar’s biodiversity and natural heritage. Officials believe that collective participation and awareness can play a pivotal role in ensuring the successful implementation of the sparrow homecoming project.
