AK Khandelwal Assumes Charge as General Manager of East Central Railway
Hajipur, 31st October 2023: AK Khandelwal has taken over as the new General Manager of East Central Railway on October 30, 2023. Prior to this, he held the position of Chief Executive Director (Gati Shakti) in the Railway Board.
A distinguished officer of the 1987 batch of the Indian Railway Engineering Service (IRSE), Khandelwal brings with him over 34 years of experience in the Indian Railways. He is a graduate in Civil Engineering from MNIT, Jaipur, and holds an M.Tech degree from IIT, Roorkee.
Throughout his career, Khandelwal has been instrumental in the creation and maintenance of crucial railway infrastructure. His expertise and leadership have contributed to the successful completion of various construction projects, including bridges, buildings, and railway tracks.
Commencing his railway service as AEN/Bellampalli in South Central Railway, Khandelwal has served in key roles across Southern Railway, Northern Railway, Railway Board, and the challenging Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link Project.
One of his notable achievements includes significant contributions to the construction of the Chenab Bridge, the world’s highest railway bridge, while serving as Chief Administrative Officer/Construction of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link Project.
During his tenure as Executive Director/Track Machine in Railway Board, Khandelwal played a pivotal role in transforming India from an importer to an exporter of Track Machine, marking a significant achievement for Indian Railways.
In the year 2016-17, while serving as Executive Director/NFR in Railway Board, Khandelwal achieved another remarkable feat. Indian Railways received non-fare revenue of Rs. 10,368 crores during this period, constituting 6.2 percent of the total revenue.
Recognizing his skills, the Railway Board appointed Khandelwal as the first Principal Executive Director of Gati Shakti Directorate. In this role, he advocated a visionary and positive approach to planning, sanctioning, and monitoring of projects, leading to the highest-ever commissioning of railway tracks by Indian Railways in the year 2022-23.
Beyond his professional achievements, Khandelwal has a keen interest in sports and has played basketball at the state level. During his tenure as the President of the Sports Association of Northern Railway in the year 2021-22, the Northern Railway team achieved success by winning the prestigious Kaul’s Gold Cup with the best sporting performance.
Adding to his credentials, Khandelwal has attended advanced studies programs at INSEAD/Singapore, ICLIF/Malaysia, and the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad, showcasing a commitment to continuous learning and strategic management.
