Asia's 2nd Largest Flood Research Centre Opens in Birpur, Bihar

Patna: A new physical modelling research centre, the largest in Eastern India and fifth largest globally, has been inaugurated in Birpur, Bihar. Built at a cost of Rs 108 crores, the facility is also the second largest of its kind in Asia. It is designed to provide flood forecasts up to 72 hours in advance, significantly enhancing flood preparedness in the region. The inauguration of model fabrication work took place on January 3, attended by Chief Engineer Varun Kumar and experts from Roorkee.

Chief Engineer Kumar announced the start of model fabrication within the trays designated for the Kosi River and its barrage. This process will enable a better understanding of the Kosi River’s pressure levels and identify areas where improvements are necessary. Bihar previously relied on a single model centre in Patna, which used mathematical models.

The new centre’s physical modelling approach will allow for more precise assessments of pressure on barrage gates and pinpoint specific intervention areas. The centre is expected to be fully operational before the onset of this year’s flood season.

Research on Kosi River’s Water Flow

The centre will conduct continuous research on the Kosi River’s water flow and pressure. A 300-meter-long model of the river is being constructed at a 1:500 scale, representing the river’s morphology over a 160 km stretch.

This detailed model will include representations of bridges, barrages, spurs, embankments, and tributary rivers. Existing models of the Kosi River and its barrages within the centre illustrate the river’s current condition from Chatra over 160 km, incorporating all relevant infrastructure.

Regional and International Benefits

Spanning 20 acres, the centre’s impact will extend beyond Bihar, benefiting the eastern and north-eastern states of India, as well as neighbouring countries.

The advanced physical modelling capabilities will provide critical data for improved flood management and mitigation efforts across the region.
