Aviation Leap for Bihar: New Patna Terminal and Bihta Airport Enclave Set to Redefine Regional Connectivity

Patna: A new chapter in Bihar’s aviation and infrastructure development is unfolding with the launch of two landmark projects: the New Terminal Building at Jayaprakash Narayan International Airport in Patna and the proposed Civil Enclave at Bihta Airport. Together, these projects — worth Rs 2,613 crore — signal the state’s firm commitment to transforming travel and trade, while embedding local culture into sustainable, future-ready design.

Perched along the banks of the river Ganga, Patna is a city steeped in heritage, while Bihta, located about 30 kilometres west, is emerging as a strategic satellite hub. As domestic air travel surges, both locations are witnessing unprecedented demand for modern aviation facilities. The new infrastructure promises to not only accommodate this growing footfall but also to catalyse regional investment, tourism and employment.

New Patna Terminal

The New Terminal Building at Patna — built at a cost of Rs 1,200 crore — spans 65,150 sq metres, equipped to handle up to 3,000 passengers during peak hours and 10 million annually. The structure blends contemporary design with local architectural elements and Mithila art motifs, reflecting Bihar’s rich cultural identity. Facilities include 64 check-in counters, 9 Automatic Tray Retrieval Systems (ATRS), 5 aerobridges, and 4 conveyor belts in the arrival hall. An apron for 11 aircraft and a multi-level car park with 1,100-vehicle capacity ensure operational ease.

Meanwhile, the new terminal at Bihta is designed to handle 5 million passengers annually up to 2047, with infrastructure extending across 68,000 sq metres. It mirrors Patna’s terminal in amenities — from 64 check-in counters and 10 ATRS to 5 aerobridges and 6 conveyor belts — while offering 16 self-check-in kiosks and auxiliary facilities such as a service block and multi-level parking.

Sustainability lies at the heart of both projects. With features like insulated roofing, LED lighting, energy-efficient glazing, and a green landscape plan, the buildings aim to achieve a 4-star GRIHA rating for Patna and 5-star for Bihta, setting benchmarks in eco-conscious infrastructure.

Bihta Airport Enclave

Beyond technical specifications, these developments are expected to yield profound economic dividends. The enhanced air connectivity is likely to spur tourism, promote healthcare and educational access, and attract new industries, turning Patna into a regional economic powerhouse.

“Make in Bihar for the world” is more than a slogan — it reflects the state’s vision of progress anchored in pride, people, and place. These aviation upgrades don’t merely serve logistical needs; they symbolise Bihar’s flight toward a more connected and prosperous future.
