Patna: In a decisive move to tackle urban pollution, Patna District Magistrate Dr. Chandrashekhar Singh announced today a sweeping ban on all diesel-powered buses, including school buses, starting September 1, 2024. The decision, made during a meeting at the Collectorate Auditorium, affects the Patna Municipal Corporation, Danapur Municipal Council, Khagaul Municipal Council, and Phulwarisharif Municipal Council areas.
The ban, rooted in Section 115 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, aims to address severe air quality concerns in Patna. Dr. Singh highlighted that diesel engines contribute disproportionately to harmful emissions, which have been linked to adverse health effects, particularly for children. “The increasing pollution levels necessitate this step to safeguard public health and ensure a cleaner environment,” Dr. Singh stated.
The District Magistrate has directed the District Transport Officer to enforce the ban strictly, ensuring all diesel-powered vehicles are replaced with CNG or electric alternatives by August 31, 2024. Vehicles operating on routes outside the specified urban areas will not be affected, provided they have valid permits.
Representatives from various sectors, including the Deputy Development Commissioner, Superintendent of Police Traffic, and bus union representatives, attended the meeting. The District Magistrate assured that concerns raised by bus unions would be relayed to the government.
The announcement marks a significant effort by Patna’s administration to mitigate pollution and improve urban air quality. All existing permits for diesel-powered buses will be revoked post- August 31, 2024, reinforcing the commitment to environmental and public health improvements.
