Battery-Operated Tricycles Transform Lives of Disabled People in Bihar

Patna: For Jaikishore, a resident of Sarauni village in Nawada, mobility was once a daily struggle. As a data entry operator in Nardiganj, his commute to the block office was an exhausting challenge. That changed on December 3, 2022, when he received a battery-operated tricycle under Bihar’s Mukhyamantri Sambal Yojana.
“Earlier, my daily journey felt like a burden, but now, traveling is effortless,” he said. With newfound independence, Jaikishore is more confident, productive, and optimistic about his future.
Jaikishore is just one among 21,185 beneficiaries who have received tricycles through the initiative, which aims to empower Divyangjans (people with disabilities) across Bihar.
Expanding Mobility for Thousands
Since the scheme’s inception, 31,642 applications have been submitted from all 38 districts, with 23,045 approvals so far. The highest number of applications came from Patna district, where 1,885 of the 2,340 applications have been approved, and 1,833 tricycles have been distributed. The process for the remaining applicants is underway.
Other districts with significant beneficiaries include:
- Rohtas: 1,684 applications received, 1,248 approved, 1,207 tricycles distributed.
- Aurangabad: 1,542 applications received, 1,075 approved, 944 tricycles distributed.

A Step Towards Empowerment
By providing battery-operated tricycles, the Bihar government is ensuring greater independence, accessibility, and dignity for disabled individuals. Beneficiaries like Jaikishore are now able to travel to work, run businesses, and participate more actively in society, breaking barriers that once restricted their mobility.
