Sabour: The 29th Research Council Meeting (Kharif-2025) began today at Bihar Agricultural University (BAU), Sabour. This four-day event, running from June 20 to 23, brings together scientists, experts and farmers to discuss better ways to improve agriculture in Bihar. The meeting was opened by BAU’s Vice Chancellor, Dr D. R. Singh, with Dr A. K. Singh, Director of Research, welcoming everyone and sharing updates about the university’s ongoing research projects and successes.
In his speech, Dr D. R. Singh said India can only become a fully developed country by 2047 if farming improves. He said that farmers in the future should earn around Rs 12 lakh each year. He also mentioned that even though India grows a lot of food today, many crops go to waste because of low prices. For example, farmers are sometimes forced to throw away vegetables like tomatoes, cabbage and parwal when they cannot sell them. He urged scientists to find ways to increase the shelf life of these products and help farmers earn more.
Many well-known scientists and agricultural officers also spoke at the event. Dr Ravindra Nath Padaria from New Delhi said farming today is not just about hard work—it is a science and needs modern thinking. Dr P. K. Singh from the Ministry of Agriculture spoke about the government’s plans to open Centres of Excellence across India, and said more should come up at BAU. Other experts also gave useful ideas, and progressive farmers like Binita Devi from Purnia and Naval Kishore Singh from Patna shared their own farming experiences.
The meeting also included technical sessions where topics like better seeds, healthy soil, water use, climate-friendly farming, and pest control were discussed. BAU also released some important publications during the event, including their annual research paper and a report on Bhagalpur’s famous Katarni rice. The meeting will continue until June 23, with all university scientists and department heads taking part in shaping the future of farming in Bihar.
