BDO In Bihar Resigns Over Alleged SDM Harassment Amid Pressure On Voter List Update

Katihar/Patna: Barsoi block development officer (BDO) Hariom Sharan in Katihar district has resigned, citing sustained mental harassment and undue pressure from the local SDM during Bihar’s intensive voter‑roll revision. Under orders from the Election Commission of India, district officials must complete the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) by July 26.

Hariom Sharan, Block Development Officer (BDO) of Barsoi block in Katihar district, has submitted his resignation to District Magistrate Manish Kumar Meena, accusing the local Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of persistent threats and humiliation.

In a letter seen by journalists, Sharan alleged that the SDM “repeatedly threatens to report me to the Election Commission and the District Magistrate,” creating an environment of mental distress.

The BDO further claimed he was being sidelined from crucial meetings about the voter revision process, and that attempts were being made to portray him as “incompetent and unsuccessful.” He alleged that minor mistakes in his work were being magnified to discredit him professionally.

“The SDM has been humiliating and insulting me for several days. It has become impossible for me to work in such an environment,” Sharan wrote in his letter.

The resignation comes as Bihar’s administrative machinery rushes to complete voter list revisions by July 26, in compliance with directives from the Election Commission of India. Sharan has reportedly sent copies of his resignation to the Chief Election Commissioner and the SDM of Barsoi.
