Bela Rail Wheel Plant Marks Decade of Success with Over 200,000 Wheels Produced
Patna: The Rail Wheel Plant in Bela, Bihar, has celebrated a decade of operations, surpassing the production milestone of 200,000 rail wheels. Established to meet the Indian Railways’ demand, the plant officially commenced production on August 1, 2014, following its foundation stone laying on July 29, 2008. It represents a significant achievement in Indian industrial capacity, built without foreign assistance and reflecting the expertise of Indian engineers and a renowned domestic company.
With a construction cost of ₹1,640 crore and a production capacity of up to 100,000 wheels annually, the Bela plant has evolved substantially. It began with the Box-N Wheel and has expanded its range to include BG Coaching (ICF), EMU, and BLC wheels. Recent additions to its production line include EMU wheels, introduced in November 2023, and BLC wheels, which started rolling off the line in July 2023.
The plant’s output has shown impressive growth over the years. From producing just 201 wheels in its first year, the plant’s production surged to a record 42,167 wheels in the fiscal year 2023-24, surpassing the Railway Board’s target. Since inception, the Bela facility has manufactured over 216,000 wheels, reflecting its critical role in supporting the Indian Railways’ expansive network.
Certified under ISO 9001:2015, 14001:2015, 45001:2018, and ISO 50001:2018, the plant emphasizes environmental sustainability and advanced IT management. It operates on scrap materials, contributing to a greener operation and providing significant employment opportunities in North Bihar.
This achievement underscores the plant’s role as a cornerstone of regional industrial revival and its continued commitment to excellence in rail wheel production.
