Bhagalpur Airport to Get New Runway as RCD Signs Rs 4 Crore Contract; Work to Begin in March
Bhagalpur : The Road Construction Department (RCD) has taken significant steps toward improving Bhagalpur Airport’s infrastructure, signing a Rs 4 crore agreement with Devpura Infra Construction Private Limited for the construction of a new runway. The work is expected to commence in March 2025, with a planned completion time of three months.
RCD Executive Engineer Arvind Kumar Gupta explained that cold weather conditions have delayed the project, particularly affecting tar work. However, he assured that construction activities would pick up pace once work begins in March. The project’s increased cost is attributed to the use of high-quality ballast, which will enhance the runway’s durability.
In an effort to boost air connectivity, Bhagalpur is also considering the introduction of an air taxi service. A proposal from the district magistrate to link the city with Kolkata, Patna, and Delhi was submitted in March 2023, but no official decision has been made on the matter.
Ahead of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s upcoming visit, the Municipal Corporation launched an initiative to clear roadside shops between the airport and Circuit House. Fines were imposed during the campaign, which sparked protests from some shopkeepers. However, the corporation maintained that the action was necessary for both the beautification of the city and the improvement of traffic flow.
