Bihar Agricultural University Marks National Farmers Day with Celebrations Highlighting Agricultural Achievements
Bhagalpur: Bihar Agricultural University (BAU) Sabour on Monday hosted National Farmers Day celebrations under the chairmanship of its vice-chancellor, Dr. D.R. Singh. The event paid tribute to late Chaudhary Charan Singh, hailed as a champion of farmers’ rights, while spotlighting the university’s efforts to enhance agricultural productivity and innovation.
In his address, Dr. Singh praised Chaudhary Charan Singh’s legacy, particularly his initiatives as Uttar Pradesh’s chief minister in land registration and cooperative development. “His vision empowered farmers and revolutionized agricultural practices, with Sugarcane Development Cooperation Committees playing a vital role in sugarcane crop production and management,” Dr. Singh said.
The vice-chancellor highlighted Bihar’s agricultural progress, noting the state’s receipt of the prestigious Krishi Karman Award five times, a recognition attributed to public welfare schemes and farmer participation. He emphasized BAU’s contribution to this success, citing the development of improved crop varieties and practical farming technologies tailored to local needs.
“Bihar Agricultural University takes pride in its achievements, including leading maize productivity during the summer season across the country,” Dr. Singh stated. He also mentioned the university’s use of information technology to support over 260,000 farmers in the past year and its designation as the nodal agency for the NITI Aayog’s Purvodaya Yojana, aimed at agricultural development in five eastern states.
The university’s advancements include a national certification for its horticultural nursery, the establishment of a food sample testing center in collaboration with the state government, and recognition as a testing center for field agricultural equipment. Dr. Singh urged farmers to leverage the university’s resources to drive growth in agriculture and allied sectors.
Key university officials, including Dr. A.K. Singh, Director of Research; Dr. A.K. Sah, Dean of Agriculture; and Dr. M. Haque, Registrar, also addressed the gathering. The event was inaugurated by Dr. R.K. Sohane, Director of Extension Education, with the vote of thanks delivered by Dr. R.N. Singh, Joint Director of Extension Education.
The celebration brought together deans, directors, college principals, public relations officers, and hundreds of farmers from five districts in Bihar, reinforcing the university’s commitment to advancing agricultural excellence.
