Patna: The Bihar Assembly witnessed chaotic scenes on Tuesday as opposition lawmakers disrupted proceedings both inside and outside the House, protesting against the revision of the state’s voter list and the prevailing law and order situation.
The uproar began moments after the House convened for the second day of the monsoon session. MLAs from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) arrived dressed in black and carried placards, voicing strong opposition to the proposed changes in the electoral roll. Demonstrations began at the assembly gates, where Speaker Nand Kishore Yadav was momentarily stopped by protesting members before marshals intervened to clear the way.
As the session commenced, opposition MLAs stormed into the well of the House, waving placards and shouting slogans. Speaker Yadav repeatedly appealed for order, accusing the opposition of being unwilling to engage in debate. “I am giving you the opportunity to speak, but your only motive seems to be disruption,” he said. Despite his warnings, the commotion escalated, forcing marshals to confiscate placards on the Speaker’s orders.
Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary had to be escorted into the assembly through an emergency gate due to the intensity of the protest at the main entrance.
Amid the ongoing disorder, question hour continued briefly before the Speaker adjourned the House until 2pm. He criticised the opposition’s conduct, warning that the public was observing their actions and would hold them accountable.
