Bihar Auto Unions Raise Concerns Over School Transport Ban

Patna: Auto-rickshaw unions in Patna have urged the Bihar government to reconsider its decision to ban auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws from transporting schoolchildren, citing the impact on drivers and commuters. The demand was raised during a meeting chaired by Superintendent of Police (Traffic), Patna, with representatives of all auto unions. The District Transport Officer (DTO) and other officials were also present.

The ban, ordered by Additional Director General of Police (Traffic), Bihar, will take effect from April 1, 2025, citing child safety concerns. However, auto unions have pushed back, highlighting the livelihood crisis it may create for thousands of drivers and the lack of viable transport alternatives for students.

Authorities to Review Demands

The Superintendent of Police (Traffic) assured the unions that their concerns would be conveyed to senior officials and discussed with the government. Meanwhile, the DTO announced that the new rule will be widely publicized over the next week to ensure awareness among school authorities, parents, and transport operators. A review of compliance will follow thereafter.

The decision has sparked debate, with many questioning whether alternative school transport arrangements are in place before enforcing the ban. The final response from the government is awaited.
