Bihar Celebrates Makar Sankranti with Special Bhaum-Pushya Yoga After 19 Years

Patna: Makar Sankranti is being celebrated today with the auspicious convergence of Bhaum-Pushya Yoga, a rare occurrence that has not happened in 19 years. The Sun will transition into Capricorn at 2:55 PM, marking the beginning of Uttarayan.

Devotees are flocking to various Ganga Ghats in Bihar, including Patna, to take a holy dip. The district administration has made elaborate arrangements at 29 Ganga Ghats in Patna, including increased security measures and restrictions on boat traffic.

Makar Sankranti is considered an auspicious day in Hinduism, marking the end of Kharmas and the beginning of all auspicious works. Devotees will perform rituals including bathing in the Ganges, offering prayers, and donating to charity.

The auspicious time for bathing and donations extends throughout the day.

Astrologers believe that taking a dip in the Ganges on Makar Sankranti is equivalent to performing a thousand Ashwamedha Yagnas.

The date of Makar Sankranti has been shifting over the years. In 1832, it fell on January 13. Subsequently, it shifted to January 14 in 1902 and to January 15 in 1972. In the coming years, Makar Sankranti is expected to be celebrated on January 15 or 16 after 2042-43.
