Darbhanga: The construction of AIIMS in Darbhanga is set to commence soon, following the central government’s approval of the site selection based on the inspection report from the central technical team. This information was shared by Darbhanga MP, Dr. Gopal Ji Thakur and JDU national working president Sanjay Kumar Jha.

Dr. Thakur highlighted that the central government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is dedicated to improving local healthcare facilities for millions of people in North Bihar, including the eight crore residents of Mithila. The proposal for Darbhanga AIIMS was included in the general budget for the year 2015-16, and in 2020, the Union Cabinet approved the construction of a 750-bed AIIMS at a cost of ₹1,264 crores. The project was prioritized in the Modi government’s agenda for the first 100 days of its third term.

Dr. Thakur emphasized his persistent efforts over decades to bring AIIMS to Darbhanga. During his first parliamentary term, he actively lobbied Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and then Health Minister and current Union Health Minister JP Nadda. He has also raised the issue multiple times in the Lok Sabha.

The proposed site for AIIMS in Darbhanga has undergone several inspections by the Central Technical Team. Based on the latest inspection in March this year, the central government has officially issued a letter confirming the site selection. The letter requests the Bihar government to expedite the provision of land transfer, a 20 MW electricity connection, a four-lane road, and water facilities, Jha said.

Approximately two years ago, the central government appointed an Executive Director for Darbhanga AIIMS, under whose leadership the office is currently operational. Dr. Thakur expressed confidence that the construction of AIIMS in Darbhanga will provide high-level healthcare facilities to millions of current and future generations at the local level.
