Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar Apologizes for Controversial Remarks on Women, Faces Opposition Ire And NCW Issues Notice
Patna, 8th November 2023: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar issued a public apology for his controversial statements made yesterday, expressing regret for any unintended hurt caused. Facing uproar in the Assembly, Kumar extended his apology amidst chaos, emphasizing his commitment to women’s welfare.
The controversy unfolded during a discussion on fertility rates when Kumar, gesturing with his hands, made remarks implying a link between girls’ education and declining birth rates.
In response to the backlash, Kumar addressed the media, clarifying that his intention was to advocate for women’s upliftment and not to offend anyone. He apologized for any unintended hurt caused by his words.
The Assembly session witnessed chaos as BJP and other opposition parties demanded Kumar’s resignation. Amidst the ruckus, Kumar apologized to the full house, expressing his regret for the controversy. He stated, “I am not only feeling ashamed but also condemning myself. I take back my words.”
Despite the public apology, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken notice of the matter. The commission has issued a notice to the Bihar Assembly Speaker, urging strict action against Kumar and the removal of his comments from the official records.
BJP leader Sushil Modi said, “Even though he has apologised but the entire Bihar state was ashamed. How did he have the courage to make such a sexist statement?…”
