Bihar CM Announces Approval for AIIMS in Darbhanga, Unveils Ambitious Healthcare Redevelopment Plans
Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar declared on Monday that the Central Government has greenlit the establishment of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Darbhanga. The proposed health facility will be constructed on the land designated by the state government, marking a significant stride in bolstering healthcare infrastructure in the region.
Speaking to reporters during the launch of various projects related to the redevelopment of Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), Chief Minister (CM) Nitish revealed the history behind the decision, saying, “We initially aimed to transform DMCH into AIIMS, and while the central authorities had initially concurred, unforeseen obstacles hindered progress. However, in January, we were presented with the site for the Darbhanga AIIMS, and now, approval has been granted by the Central Government to commence construction in Sobhan village.”
He added: “The Central Government has been urged to revise the predetermined height of Darbhanga AIIMS, and we are extending it further. Additionally, the construction of four lanes is underway, which will significantly expand the city. Following Patna, Darbhanga will host Bihar’s second AIIMS, with the identified land in Sobhan set to house the groundbreaking healthcare institution.”
Under the comprehensive plan for the redevelopment of DMCH, estimated at a cost of Rs 2742.04 crore, CM Nitish approved the construction of an academic building with an enrollment capacity of 250 students per year. The plan also includes a 2100-bed hospital and the Government Maharani Rameshwari Indian Institute of Medical Sciences in Mohanpur, Darbhanga.
The Chief Minister inaugurated various schemes, including a 400-bed surgical block valued at Rs 194.08 crore. During the program, he also inaugurated ‘Didi Ki Rasoi’ in the Surgery Block, emphasizing the government’s commitment to healthcare and public welfare.
Speaking about the ongoing development, CM Nitish said, “We are expanding DMCH further. Already equipped with a 400-bed hospital, the addition of a 2500-bed facility will enhance healthcare and medical education. The strategic location ensures increased enrollment, and a super-specialty hospital is also in the pipeline.”
While inspecting the hospital premises, CM Nitish directed officials to prioritize construction work that prevents waterlogging, ensuring seamless drainage during the rainy season. He underscored the importance of expeditiously commencing the construction of the 2100-bed hospital and the Government Maharani Rameshwari Indian Institute of Medical Sciences.
CM Nitish concluded by expressing optimism about the transformative impact of the AIIMS in Shobhan, Darbhanga, emphasizing improved connectivity and the expansion of the city.
