Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar inaugurated the restoration of the old Ganga stream and redevelopment work at Seedhi Ghat in Bakhtiyarpur on Saturday, describing the project as a return to the sacred river’s roots and a major step forward for local tourism and religious life.

The project, which includes concrete protective work along the right bank of the Ganga near the historic ghat, was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony and the unveiling of a commemorative plaque. The Chief Minister also took part in the Ganga Aarti and offered prayers at the Shri Radhe Krishna Temple, drawing warm chants and slogans of support from local residents.

Addressing the gathering, the chief minister said the area held deep personal and cultural significance. “In our childhood, we used to come here every day to bathe in the Ganga,” he recalled. “Over the years, the stream had drifted away from Seedhi Ghat. We have now brought it back.”

The Rs 63.54 crore redevelopment scheme includes 330 metres of new ghats, 2.1 kilometres of anti-erosion work, and a paved pathway for tourists. Toilets, changing rooms, landscaping, and improved lighting have also been added to enhance visitor experience. Officials expect these upgrades to significantly boost footfall.

The restoration of the old Ganga channel, once flowing adjacent to the ancient Seedhi Ghat temple, was completed at a cost of Rs 34.27 crore. The channel, which had shifted northwards over decades, had made it difficult for devotees to perform rituals. Under the project, silt was cleared over 4.4 kilometres between Ghansurpur and Dedoor villages, and 1.52 kilometres of geo-bag slope pitching was carried out to prevent erosion in nearby inhabited areas such as Karauta and Hatia.

Speaking to media, officials said maintenance of the revived channel and bank protection work would continue for the next three years to ensure sustained flow and safety.

CM Nitish also paid floral tributes at the memorial of freedom fighter and former MP Pandit Sheelbhadra Yaji and his wife, Balkeshwari Yaji.
