Bihar: Delhi Police Team Held Hostage in Purnia After Mistaken Raid, Real Rape Accused Arrested Later
Purnia: A team from the Delhi Police found themselves in a tense situation in Purnia, Bihar, when they were taken hostage by local residents after mistakenly entering the wrong house during a raid. The incident occurred in the Guddi Bazaar area under the Kasba police station’s jurisdiction, where the police had come to arrest a rape accused, but instead, they mistakenly entered the bedroom of an unrelated couple.
The five-member Delhi Police team, led by Police Sub Inspector Sumit Yadav, had traveled to Purnia without coordinating with local police, lacking female officers and a proper warrant. Their target was Vicky Singh, alias Vicky Thakur, an accused in a rape case who had allegedly fled Delhi and was hiding in Purnia at his in-laws’ house. However, the police mistakenly raided the house of Krishna Chaudhary, leading to a heated confrontation.
Krishna Chaudhary recounted the incident, stating, “I was in the bedroom with my wife when suddenly, five officers—only one in uniform—barged in and forcibly dragged us out of the house without explanation. They accused me of being Vicky Thakur, but I have never been to Delhi, nor am I involved in any crime.” Chaudhary said he had to present his Aadhaar card to prove his identity before the police realized their mistake and apologized in writing.
The situation escalated when local residents, outraged by the police’s actions, surrounded the Delhi Police team and took them hostage, demanding answers and justice for the mistaken raid. The situation remained tense until the local police, led by Kasba police station in-charge Ajay Kumar Ajnabee, arrived at the scene and mediated the release of the Delhi Police officers.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Upendra Nath Verma later addressed the media, confirming that the Delhi Police had not coordinated with the local police and lacked the necessary warrant for the operation. “The Delhi Police team acted independently, which led to this unfortunate incident. They also violated protocol by not including female officers in the raid,” SP Verma said.
The situation was finally resolved with the arrest of the real accused, Vicky Thakur, who was found hiding in a different location.
