Patna: Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and Agriculture Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha on Wednesday reviewed plant protection schemes at Krishi Bhawan, Patna, issuing a series of directions aimed at safeguarding farmers from crop losses caused by pests and diseases.
Emphasising timely communication, the deputy CM instructed agriculture officials to ensure wide publicity of forecast-based alerts about potential pest outbreaks. He said information must reach farmers promptly through daily newspapers, radio jingles, and social media so they can take preventive action.
To further disseminate awareness, hoardings and banners detailing government schemes, pesticide safety, and proper usage techniques will be installed at panchayat, block, and district-level government offices.
Sinha also highlighted the role of pesticide sellers as first points of contact for farmers. He called for mandatory training of all pesticide retailers on the scientific use of agrochemicals, identification of pests, and possible side effects. Sellers will also be required to prominently display banners related to plant protection schemes at their shops.
The Deputy Chief Minister directed pesticide inspectors to carry out regular inspections, collect samples of suspicious products, and ensure laboratory testing to maintain quality standards. He stressed the need to educate farmers about the environmental and health risks associated with pesticide misuse.
To curb the sale of banned agrochemicals, officials at the district level were instructed to conduct raids and strictly enforce the Pesticide Act.
The deputy CM said these measures will help improve crop productivity, protect farmer welfare, and ensure sustainable agricultural practices across the state.
