Bihar Environment Minister Issues Directives to Expedite Forest Department Initiatives
Patna: The Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Dr. Prem Kumar, issued critical directives to expedite various departmental projects during a comprehensive review meeting held on Tuesday. Convened in the auditorium of Aranya Bhawan, Patna, the meeting saw the participation of senior officials, including the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, and regional officers via video conferencing.
Dr. Kumar emphasized the need for immediate action in divisions lagging behind in utilizing allocated funds for the current financial year. He directed officials to finalize preparations for spring tree plantations in North Bihar and instructed the timely completion of tasks related to issuing sawmill licenses.
The Minister confirmed his presence at the inauguration of forestry classes at the Bihar Forestry College and Research Institute (BFCRI), Munger, scheduled for 23 November 2024, and ordered all necessary arrangements to be completed promptly.
The review covered several critical areas, including an analysis of spending efficiency in forest divisions to ensure optimal use of allocated funds. Preparations for seasonal tree plantations, particularly winter and spring plantations in North Bihar, were discussed in detail. Approval processes for establishing nurseries across the state in the next financial year were also prioritized. Pending eco-tourism projects were reviewed to determine their status and next steps, while updates on initiatives related to minor forest produce were presented.
The status of the Bihar State Wood Policy and strategies for its implementation were also addressed. The meeting emphasized finalizing timelines for issuing sawmill licenses and ensuring timely follow-up with central authorities on pending government projects. Additionally, plans for organizing the State Level Forest Department Sports Competition in 2025 were discussed.
Dr. Kumar called for a meticulous approach to ensure the timely implementation of all programs under review. Specific attention was given to finalizing plans for eco-tourism development and advancing the state’s agroforestry initiatives, which span the financial years 2021-25.
