The Bihar government has extended the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) until December 31, 2025, aiming to accelerate the construction of permanent housing for the urban poor, with over 1.5 lakh homes already built under the scheme’s first phase.
According to the state’s Urban Development and Housing Department, 2,64,604 houses have been sanctioned so far, with construction underway for the remaining units. The scheme, which supports beneficiaries with at least 30 square metres of private land under its Beneficiary-Led Construction (BLC) component, provides financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh per household—Rs 1.5 lakh from the Centre and Rs 50,000 from the state.
A total of Rs 4,148.16 crore has been earmarked for the initiative, with the central government contributing Rs 3,111 crore and the state government Rs 1,037 crore.
The second phase of PMAY-U began on September 1, 2024, and will run for five years. For the 2025–26 financial year alone, a budget of Rs 2,305.51 crore has been set aside. As of now, 4,33,508 applications have been submitted online from 261 municipal bodies, and 2,02,379 beneficiaries have been verified both physically and digitally.
In addition to permanent housing, the scheme also aims to ease the urban housing crisis by promoting rental housing at affordable rates and offering credit-linked subsidies to homebuyers through primary lending institutions.
