Samastipur: The quiet neighbourhood of Mohanpur Ward-39 in Samastipur has been engulfed in mourning since Wednesday as the news of 20-year-old Saurav’s demise spread like wildfire. Sobs echoed from his family’s home, with neighbours grieving the loss of such a promising young man.

The incident took place on Wednesday when Saurav’s body was discovered hanging in his hostel room at IIT Guwahati. Saurav, a student of computer science, was pursuing his dreams at one of India’s premier institutions. His father, Pradeep Mahato, vehemently asserts that this was not a case of suicide but a sinister murder. “There was no reason for him to take his own life. We received no prior indication of any distress from the college or hostel authorities,” expressed a distraught Pradeep Mahato, barely able to hold back his tears.

Saurav’s father, a farmer by profession, revealed that on the fateful morning, Saurav had called home expressing slight concern about being harassed by certain groups of college students. However, he dismissed it as a passing issue, deeming it “normal.”

Pradeep Mahato further lamented the lack of communication from the college or hostel authorities following the tragedy. “Despite having my contact details, no one reached out to inform us about the incident. It was only through a call to my elder son, Gaurav, in Bengaluru that we learned of the devastating news,” he recounted.

Refuting claims of suicide, Pradeep Mahato insists that his son was a victim of foul play. Upon reaching the hostel, he discovered the room in disarray, further fueling suspicions of a sinister conspiracy. Pradeep Mahato has filed a formal complaint with the Assam Police, alleging murder and demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Saurav’s untimely demise. He has also sought the attention of Bihar’s Chief Minister and the Director-General of Police to ensure justice for his son.

Saurav, a brilliant scholar, had secured an impressive All India Rank of 269 (OBC) in the JEE Advanced 2023 examination on his first attempt, with a General category rank of 1100. His academic prowess earned him admission to the prestigious IIT Guwahati.
