Patna: With the threat of floods looming, Bihar’s Water Resources Department is stepping up its preparations by implementing an advanced method of embankment reinforcement using geo-tubes. This initiative aims to bolster the strength and durability of embankments, ensuring greater safety for vulnerable areas.
The department is actively engaged in stud construction work on the embankments, leveraging the unique properties of geo-tubes. These innovative structures are crafted from a specialized geo-technological material (geo-textile) and are filled with silt extracted directly from the riverbed.
How Geo-Tubes Bolster Flood Defenses
The process involves using a mud pump equipped with cutters that efficiently excavate riverbed material. This material is then used to fill the geo-tubes. This integrated approach not only reinforces the embankments but also simultaneously helps clean the riverbed by removing excess silt.
A key advantage of geo-tubes is their ability to function as a single, solid structure across their entire length. When deployed on the ground surface during floods or high water flow, their flat design allows for easy installation, providing effective protection to the embankment. The substantial weight of the riverbed material filled within them significantly reduces the risk of slippage or being washed away under normal conditions. This method is considered more durable and effective compared to traditional construction techniques.
This proactive effort by the Water Resources Department is a crucial step towards creating more resilient flood defenses. It is expected to not only protect communities from immediate flood impacts but also ensure the long-term structural stability of riverbank areas across Bihar.
