Bihar government boosts sports with increased awards, honors over 600 athletes and coaches

Patna: The Bihar government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, is making concerted efforts to develop sports across the state. To provide young athletes with the tools they need to succeed, the state is establishing sports facilities that meet international standards, ensuring that children can excel in sports alongside their education and represent Bihar on the global stage.

As part of its initiatives, the government organizes the annual Bihar State Sports Awards to recognize and celebrate athletes and coaches from Bihar who have excelled in national and international competitions. During the ceremony, recipients are awarded certificates and prize money, and individuals who have made significant contributions to the promotion of sports in the state are also honored.

The number of athletes representing Bihar in national and international sports events has seen a notable increase. In recognition of this success, the state government has raised the award amount to Rs. 5 crore. Ashutosh, a javelin throw coach from Jamui, was the sole recipient of the Khel Samman award this year. He has been training promising javelin throwers under the State Sports Authority for several years and has himself won numerous gold medals for Bihar at the national level. Additionally, Virendra Yadav was honored for his gold medal in javelin throw, and Ashish Kumar received recognition for winning gold in the hammer throw event.

In a special gesture, Bihar became the first state to honor Indian hockey star Sreejesh after his medal-winning performance at the Olympics. Sreejesh, widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in Indian hockey, has been hailed for inspiring Bihar’s athletes with his visit.

At this year’s Bihar Sports Honors, 644 individuals were recognized, including 615 athletes from 33 sports, 21 coaches, 4 sports associations, and 4 sports officials. A total of Rs. 7.5 crore in prize money was distributed.

In 2023, the awards recognized 411 athletes and 11 coaches. To date, a total of Rs. 15.5 crore has been awarded to 1,272 outstanding athletes. The Bihar government remains committed to elevating sports in the state, offering support through programs such as the “Medal Lao, Naukri Pao” scheme, which provides jobs to medal-winning athletes. Through these initiatives, the government is fostering a brighter future for Bihar’s sporting talent.
