Patna: The Bihar government has taken a significant step toward the construction of a new Greenfield airport on the border of Patna, Jehanabad, and Nalanda. Chief Secretary Amrit Lal Meena has written to the Union Civil Aviation Ministry, stating that the new international airport will improve transportation, boost business activities, and cater to future needs.
While the exact location has not been disclosed in the letter, officials believe the Patna-Jehanabad-Nalanda border is a suitable site. The final decision will be made with the Centre’s approval.
Need for a New Airport
The proposal for a new Greenfield airport is driven by several factors:
- Rajgir’s International Stadium: With an international stadium built in Rajgir, players currently land at Patna Airport, which has a short runway. The new airport will provide better connectivity.
- Sports Village in Punpun: The Bihar government plans to build a sports village in Punpun on 100 acres, aimed at preparing athletes for the Olympics. A new airport between Punpun and Rajgir will facilitate smooth travel.
What is a Greenfield Airport?
A Greenfield airport refers to a completely new airport built on undeveloped land, away from dense populations, minimizing land acquisition challenges. In contrast, a Brownfield airport involves upgrading and expanding an existing airport with modern facilities.
Existing and Proposed Airports in Patna Region
- Jai Prakash Narayan International Airport: Currently operational in Patna.
- Bihta Airport: Undergoing construction as a Brownfield airport.
- Sonpur Airport Proposal: MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy has proposed a new Greenfield airport north of JP Setu.
- CM’s Demand for New Airport: During the Pragati Yatra, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar advocated for a Greenfield airport near Patna city.
With increasing air traffic and infrastructure demands, the Bihar government is pushing for enhanced air connectivity in the state. The final decision now rests with the central government.
