Bihar Health Department Gears Up to Combat Heatwave and Seasonal Diseases with Special Hospital Preparations

Patna : As Bihar braces for an intense heatwave, the state’s health department has ramped up preparations to tackle heat-related illnesses and seasonal diseases. With temperatures already crossing 41°C in Buxar on Thursday and forecasts suggesting a rise to 43°C in the coming days, the government is on high alert.

Health Minister issues advisory for action plan

State Health Minister Mangal Pandey announced that an advisory has been issued to all health institutions, instructing them to prepare a detailed action plan to manage the anticipated surge in heat-related cases. The directive emphasises special arrangements for vulnerable groups, including children under five, pregnant women, and the elderly. Awareness camps will also be organised to educate communities about preventive measures.

“The department is fully prepared to address heat-related diseases and safeguard public health,” Pandey stated, adding that the advisory aligns with the National Action Plan on Heat-Related Illnesses.

Hospitals equipped to handle heat emergencies

To strengthen the healthcare response, hospitals have been instructed to dedicate at least five beds for heatstroke patients and establish Rapid Response Teams for swift management. Measures include ensuring the availability of air conditioning, fans, coolers, and cold drinking water in district and community health institutions. Essential supplies such as oral rehydration salts (ORS), anti-diarrheal medication, ice packs, rectal thermometers, and portable bathtubs will be stocked.

Additionally, ORS corners will be set up in all health facilities, and adequate first aid will be provided at health centres. For severe cases, referral links with district hospitals have been established, with 102 ambulances equipped to offer protection from heatstroke during transit.

District officials tasked with inter-departmental coordination

In a related move, District Magistrate Dr. Chandrashekhar Singh has assigned responsibilities to district-level officials from various departments to ensure public safety during the heatwave. Authorities have been directed to follow the standard operating procedures issued by the Disaster Management Department and other relevant guidelines.

Departments including Health, Animal and Fisheries Resources, Public Health Engineering, Urban Development, Education, Social Welfare, Rural Development, and Fire Services have been instructed to coordinate efforts. Ensuring access to drinking water in public spaces and maintaining vigilance during the peak summer months remains a priority.
