Bihar to Digitise Over 50 Lakh Land Records by July End

The state aims to digitise more than 4.17 crore land records in three phases to curb disputes and enhance transparency.

Patna: Bihar has launched a large-scale campaign to digitise all land-related documents to improve transparency and prevent tampering. By the end of July, more than 50 lakh documents from 1990 to 1995 will be available online.

The Department of Prohibition, Excise and Registration has set a target to digitise over 4,17,00,000 documents in three phases. In the first phase, documents from 1990 to 1995 are being uploaded. The second phase will cover around 2,23,00,000 documents between 1948 and 1990, while the third phase will digitise over 1,44,00,000 records from 1908 to 1947.

Officials said the department holds land documents dating back to 1796, most of which relate to land and property ownership. However, storing and preserving these ageing records has become increasingly challenging. Lack of access to timely records is among the major causes of rising land disputes in the state.

Excise Commissioner and Inspector General of Registration Rajneesh Kumar Singh said citizens will soon be able to view and download their land records from home, offering significant relief, especially to senior citizens. The department is working on a war footing to complete the process.

The digitisation process involves three stages – scanning the documents, uploading their information, and finally making them publicly accessible.
