Bihar: Rainfall Brings Relief, But Thunderstorm Alert Issued for Northern Districts

monsoon rain in bihar

Patna: The monsoon season officially began in Bihar today, with early signs of relief from the intense summer heat. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Patna, this June is expected to bring above-average rainfall across most parts of the state, benefiting the agricultural sector and easing heatwave conditions. However, a thunderstorm alert has been issued for several northern districts.

Temperature Outlook: Mixed Forecast for June

While some northeastern areas of Bihar may experience higher-than-normal daytime temperatures this month, the maximum temperature in the remaining regions, including Patna, is likely to remain below average. The IMD forecasts daytime highs between 34°C and 36°C, while nighttime lows are expected to be warmer than usual, ranging between 28°C and 30°C.

Over the next few days, a 2-3°C rise in maximum temperatures is anticipated in some districts.

Above-Normal Rainfall Predicted

The state is likely to receive more than 59.1 mm of rainfall, the average for June. These favorable rainfall conditions are expected to normalize weather patterns, provide much-needed agricultural support, and reduce the risk of heatwaves.

Rain activity has already begun in several districts over the past 24 hours. Kusheshwarnath in Darbhanga recorded the highest rainfall at 37.2 mm, while Patna received 1.6 mm. The capital also reported the highest maximum temperature in the state this season at 40.6°C.

Monsoon Progress: Early Onset in Kerala, Bihar Next

With the monsoon already reaching Kerala ahead of schedule and showers lashing the northeastern states, it is anticipated that the monsoon will reach Bihar by the second week of June. However, IMD has cautioned that any development of cyclonic circulations may delay its arrival.

Yellow Alert Issued for Thunderstorms in North Bihar

A yellow alert has been issued for South East and West Champaran, Shivhar, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Supaul, Araria, and Kishanganj, warning of possible thunderstorms over the next 24 hours.

Meanwhile, partly cloudy skies and isolated rainfall are expected across southern parts of the state, including Patna.
