Bihar Rings in the New Year Amid Plunging Temperatures and Icy Winds

Patna: Bihar is reeling under the grip of icy cold winds as westerly winds sweep across all districts, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures. According to the Patna Meteorological Centre, Patna recorded a maximum temperature of 19.5°C, marking a significant decrease of 6°C in the past two days. The city’s minimum temperature has also fallen by 3°C.

Across the state, Purnia registered the highest temperature at 23.5°C, while Saharsa recorded the lowest at 8.5°C. Meteorologists warn that a series of western disturbances will continue to hit Bihar throughout January, leading to further declines in temperature.

“Frequent western disturbances will intensify the cold. Temperatures are expected to drop further after January 6,” a meteorologist said. Tuesday marked the first significant temperature plunge of the season in Patna, with colder conditions expected to prevail in the coming days.

Cold wave on the horizon

Meteorologists predict that cold wave-like conditions could develop after January 6. A cold wave is officially declared when an area’s minimum temperature drops to 4°C and consistently remains below 10°C.

In addition to plunging temperatures, dense fog is expected to envelop 15 districts, including Valmikinagar, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi, Saharsa, Bhagalpur, Munger, Rohtas, and Madhubani. Morning visibility in these areas is likely to be severely affected, adding to the challenges of daily life.

Residents have been advised to take necessary precautions to protect themselves from the harsh weather conditions as the cold spell continues to tighten its grip on the state.
