Patna: Bihar is on the brink of a transformative shift in railway infrastructure, with the state soon to become a confluence of India’s most modern train services — Vande Bharat, Namo Bharat, and Amrit Bharat. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has likened this trio to a ‘Triveni’ — a sacred confluence — for Indian Railways, and Bihar is set to host two new additions from this group: the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail and Amrit Bharat Express.
While multiple Vande Bharat Express trains already operate in the state, the Amrit Bharat Express and the newly announced Namo Bharat Rapid Rail services mark a significant expansion. These developments are part of a broader acceleration in rail infrastructure projects across Bihar, driven by renewed central focus and enhanced funding.
A Leap in Regional Connectivity
The new services are expected to significantly improve travel for residents of northern Bihar, particularly in the Mithila region. The Namo Bharat Rapid Rail will run between Jaynagar and Patna, becoming only the second such service in the country after the Ahmedabad–Bhuj route. With 16 air-conditioned coaches and a capacity of over 2,000 passengers, this semi-high-speed service is designed to cater to short-distance intercity travel with world-class features.
Built under the Made in India initiative, the train includes advanced safety systems such as Kavach technology, CCTV surveillance, fire detection, and emergency communication setups. Passenger comfort is also prioritised with modern ergonomic seating, charging ports, vacuum-based toilets, and automatic doors. A route map indicator system, akin to those in metro trains, has been introduced for the first time in Indian open-line services.
Amrit Bharat Express: Non-AC Comfort, Modern Technology
The Saharsa–Lokmanya Tilak Amrit Bharat Express will be India’s third of its kind, joining the ranks of trains currently running between Darbhanga–Anand Vihar Terminal and Malda Town–Bengaluru. Although non-air-conditioned, the train promises enhanced travel quality with facilities such as foldable snack tables, bottle holders, mobile stands, and radium flooring strips.
Manufactured in Chennai’s Integral Coach Factory, the Amrit Bharat Express employs push-pull technology to eliminate the need for engine reversal, and features innovations like an electro-pneumatic flushing system, soap dispensers, and the first fire detection system in non-AC coaches. An on-board monitoring system will enable real-time updates on wheel and bearing conditions, improving safety and operational efficiency.
Three New Rail Projects to Be Inaugurated
In addition to these new train services, Prime Minister Modi is expected to inaugurate three key rail lines: the Supaul–Pipra, Khagaria–Alauli, and Hasanpur–Bithan routes. New passenger trains will be launched on these lines, including the Samastipur–Saharsa and Pipra–Saharsa routes.
These lines are strategically significant, connecting underserved regions and reducing travel times for thousands of commuters. Officials say the timely execution of these projects has been made possible by the increased pace of construction and greater financial support from the Centre.
Railway Revival for Mithila and Beyond
For a region often underserved by modern infrastructure, the arrival of these new trains and rail links represents more than just enhanced mobility — it offers economic promise, employment opportunities, and improved access to education and healthcare.
As Bihar positions itself as a key player in India’s railway transformation, the Triveni of Vande Bharat, Amrit Bharat, and Namo Bharat stands as a symbol of the state’s growing connectivity and renewed development momentum.
