Bihar to Add 100 New MBBS Seats in 2025-26 Session; Chhapra Medical College to Begin Admissions

Chhapra: In a major boost to medical education in Bihar, 100 new MBBS seats will be added in the upcoming academic session 2025-26 with the launch of a new government medical college in Chhapra (Saran). With this, the total number of MBBS seats in government medical colleges across the state will rise to 1,590, providing more opportunities to aspiring doctors.

Until now, Bihar had 1,490 MBBS seats in its government-run institutions. The additional seats in Chhapra mark a significant step toward strengthening healthcare infrastructure and accessibility to medical education in the region.

Over 2,500 Total MBBS Seats in Bihar Including Private Colleges

When private medical colleges are factored in, the total number of MBBS seats in Bihar will exceed 2,500. The documents related to the admission process for the new seats in Saran have already been prepared. Students will benefit significantly from the expansion, as more seats reduce competition and increase chances of admission within the state.

National Expansion: 10,000 More MBBS Seats Across India

At the national level, the session 2025-26 is expected to witness the addition of 10,000 new MBBS seats. Currently, there are 706 medical colleges in India offering 1,15,812 MBBS seats. Last year, the number of seats saw a similar increase. This year, 40 to 45 new medical colleges, both in government and private sectors, are likely to start admissions.

  • Patna Medical College (PMC) – 200 seats
  • Nalanda Medical College (NMC), Patna – 150 seats
  • Darbhanga Medical College (DMC), Laheriasarai – 120 seats
  • Bhagalpur Medical College – 120 seats
  • Muzaffarpur Medical College – 120 seats
  • Gaya Medical College – 120 seats
  • Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) – 120 seats
  • Government Medical College, Bettiah – 120 seats
  • NIMS, Pawapuri – 120 seats
  • Government Medical College, Madhepura – 100 seats
  • ESIC Medical College, Bihta – 100 seats
  • Government Medical College, Purnia – 100 seats

Additionally, there are 140 BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) seats, including 40 in Patna Dental College and 100 in Nalanda Dental College.

NEET-UG Counseling Process to Begin Soon

With the NEET UG 2025 results declared, the Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) is set to initiate counseling for 15% All India Quota seats. Following this, the Bihar Joint Entrance Competitive Examination Board (BCECEB) will commence registration for 85% state quota seats in medical and dental colleges.

The state counseling process will begin after the completion of Round 1 of All India Quota counseling. If a candidate doesn’t secure a seat in the national round, they will be eligible for state-level counseling rounds 1 to 4. Further details regarding dates and schedules will be released through notifications by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and Bihar’s designated counseling authority.
