Bihar to Build Modern Fish Malls in Four Districts, Including Nalanda
Nalanda: In a bid to boost its fisheries sector, Bihar’s state government has announced plans to construct modern Fish Malls in four districts, including Nalanda, Patna, Munger, and Bhojpur. The initiative, funded under the Prime Minister’s Matsya Sampada Yojana, has an estimated cost of ₹60 crore.
The proposed Fish Mall in Nalanda will be situated near Nalanda Mor, close to Mohanpur in the Silav block, covering 4 acres of land. Located on the Bihar Sharif-Rajgir main road, the site is strategically placed to attract tourists. The project is expected to be completed within a year.
A One-Stop Hub for Fish Farming and Tourism
Shambhu Prasad, District Fisheries Officer for Nalanda, described the mall as a significant development for the local fisheries industry. “This will be a game-changer,” he said. “The mall will not only feature a museum with a variety of fish species, but it will also provide fish farmers with all the necessary tools and services under one roof.”
The complex will include an aquarium showcasing colourful fish, along with facilities where tourists can enjoy fresh fish dishes. Fish farmers will also be able to purchase essential supplies, such as feed, nets, and boats, all in one location.
Addressing Cost Barriers for Fish Farmers
At present, many of Bihar’s fish farmers rely on distant states like Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh for sourcing fish feed, which significantly raises production costs. The Fish Mall is designed to solve this issue by providing local access to these vital resources.
Job Creation and Economic Impact
The project is also expected to have a positive impact on local employment. More than 100 people are expected to find direct employment opportunities, with thousands more benefiting indirectly through the wider economic effects.
Currently, 1,300 to 1,400 fish farmers are active in Nalanda, which boasts 800 government-owned ponds, 500 of which are operational. The remaining 300 ponds have been encroached upon. The establishment of the Fish Mall is anticipated to stimulate further interest in fish farming, offering a boost to the industry.
Beyond its economic benefits, the Fish Mall is also expected to play a role in the region’s tourism development, drawing visitors and further contributing to the local economy.
A Vision for Sustainable Growth
The Fish Mall project represents a significant step forward for Bihar’s fisheries sector, aiming to enhance both production and sustainability. By providing modern infrastructure and addressing the challenges faced by fish farmers, the initiative promises to transform the industry while simultaneously supporting the region’s tourism and broader economic growth.
