Bihar to Enforce Traffic Rules Using AI, Automated Challans in 26 Districts
Patna: The Bihar Transport Department has initiated a project to identify traffic violators using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automated systems. CCTV cameras will be installed at 72 intersections across 26 districts, enabling the automatic issuance of challans for violations such as riding without helmets and triple riding.
Cabinet Approval for CCTV Installation
The proposal for installing state-of-the-art CCTV cameras with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology was approved during a cabinet meeting. The Transport Minister emphasized that this step would not only reduce road accidents but also create awareness about road safety among citizens.
Automatic Challans from April 2025
The project targets completion by March 2025, with automated challans starting from April 1. The system will scan vehicle number plates and issue challans to the registered vehicle owners in case of rule violations.
Reducing Road Accidents
According to the Transport Department, 1389 people died in Bihar in 2023 due to not wearing helmets, including 882 two-wheeler drivers and 507 pillion riders. The initiative aims to reduce fatalities caused by head injuries during road accidents.
Multi-Purpose CCTV Cameras
In addition to monitoring traffic violations, these cameras will help identify individuals involved in breaking law and order, thereby enhancing overall security in the monitored areas. The system is already operational in Patna and four other smart city districts and will now be expanded.
Public Awareness Campaign
To ensure smooth implementation, a public awareness campaign will precede the new system. The campaign will educate citizens about traffic rules, the importance of road safety, and the challan process.
List of Districts
The 26 districts where CCTV cameras will be installed include Madhubani, Supaul, Aurangabad, Gopalganj, Vaishali, and Araria, among others. This step is expected to improve traffic management, reduce accidents, and encourage compliance with the Motor Vehicles Act.
Benefits of Automated Monitoring
The initiative will promote road safety, enhance traffic management, and provide valuable data for further improvements. It will also instill a sense of responsibility among road users, making Bihar’s roads safer and more organized.
