Bihar to Get Magahi and Bhojpuri Haats Showcasing Regional Culture, Food and Handicrafts

Patna: The Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government is set to establish Magahi Haat in Patna and Bhojpuri Haat in Rohtas, modeled after the popular Mithila Haat in Madhubani. These upcoming cultural hubs will serve as new picnic spots, food destinations, and wedding venues while promoting local traditions, art, and cuisine.
According to Lokesh Kumar Singh, Secretary, Bihar Tourism Department, tenders have already been issued for both haats. “Patna Haat will reflect the Magadh tradition, while Rohtas Haat will embody the vibrant Bhojpuri culture,” Singh said.
Bhojpuri Haat: A Cultural Hub Near Indrapuri Barrage
The Bhojpuri Haat will be built on 10 acres of land near Indrapuri Barrage in Rohtas district. The land, previously under the Water Resources Department, has been transferred to the Tourism Department. A budget of ₹25.25 crore has been allocated for the project, which is scheduled to be completed by September 2026.
The site will showcase Bhojpuri art, cuisine, and folk traditions. From traditional dishes like sattu and big rotis to stalls selling locally made goods, the haat aims to support local farmers, forest dwellers from the Kaimur hills, and regional artisans. It is expected to generate employment and become a tourist attraction, especially for visitors to the nearby barrage.
A dedicated space will also be available for weddings, blending nature with cultural heritage.
Magahi Haat in the Heart of Patna Near Ganga River
The Magahi Haat will be constructed at Hexa Bhawan near Gandhi Maidan in Patna, on land currently lying in a dilapidated state. The ₹48.96 crore project, tendered by Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation Limited, is expected to be completed by June 2027.
Inspired by Delhi Haat and Mithila Haat, this three-storey emporium will feature:
- Handicrafts and artworks from across Bihar
- Two multi-cuisine restaurants serving Magadh-region delicacies
- A children’s play zone
- Underground parking, fire safety systems, lifts, and CCTV surveillance
Situated near Marine Drive, the haat promises a unique experience where visitors can enjoy the cool breeze of the Ganga alongside shopping and cultural exploration. The development aligns with the government’s ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative, aiming to provide a permanent market for local artisans.
Mithila Haat: The Blueprint for Regional Cultural Promotion
The inspiration for both haats, Mithila Haat in Jhanjharpur (Madhubani), spans 26 acres and has gained both domestic and international acclaim. It revives fading cultural elements such as Dheki, Ukhaid, and Samanth, and provides immersive experiences where women prepare traditional dishes like Madua roti, Makhana kheer, and Satanja roti using age-old methods.
With a capacity to host 4,500 visitors, Mithila Haat has proven the potential of cultural tourism in Bihar.
Boost for Cultural Tourism and Employment
Both Magahi and Bhojpuri Haats are expected to significantly boost rural employment, promote traditional folk arts, and create new tourist destinations in the state. As Bihar positions itself as a center for cultural tourism, these projects underline the state government’s commitment to celebrating and preserving its diverse heritage.
