Bihar to Set Up Special Courts for Fast Trial in Illegal Arms Cases

To deal with the growing number of arms-related crimes, Bihar Police has proposed setting up special courts in all districts for faster trials.

Patna: Bihar Police is taking strong steps to stop the use of illegal weapons in the state. In the last one year alone, more than 5,000 people have been caught with illegal guns. To speed up the punishment process, the police has now proposed that special courts be set up in every district to handle Arms Act cases quickly.

Director General of Police (DGP) Vinay Kumar said that many of these cases are getting delayed because there are no fast-track courts. These delays allow criminals to escape punishment for a long time. The DGP said that if special courts are made, the cases will move faster, and strict punishment will be given, which will help reduce the use of illegal weapons.

He also pointed out that from 2005 to 2011, Bihar had fast-track courts that gave punishment in Arms Act cases within a week. At that time, people were afraid to carry weapons openly. But after these courts were closed, cases started dragging on, and such crimes increased again. In most Arms Act cases, police officers’ testimony is enough to get the accused punished.

The Arms Act (1959) is a law that controls the use, sale, and transport of weapons. If someone is caught with a weapon without a licence, they can be jailed for 3 to 7 years and also fined. Using banned weapons can even lead to life imprisonment. With this new proposal, Bihar hopes to send a strong message to criminals and make the state safer for everyone.
