Patna: Two young men died in separate railway incidents in Bihar on Monday — one in Patna and another in Bhagalpur — raising concerns about mental health and safety near railway tracks.
In Patna City, a 35-year-old man identified as Om Mehta reportedly died by suicide after being struck by a train. The resident of Murtujiganj, under Mehndiganj police station, is said to have recorded a video calling a friend a “traitor” before taking his life. According to family members, Om had been assaulted by a friend shortly before the incident. The video is believed to have gone viral, although police said they have not yet seen it.
Family members removed the body from the tracks before alerting police, who later conducted a Panchnama and sent the body to Nalanda Medical College Hospital for postmortem examination.
Mehndiganj police have so far treated the incident as an accident. “Preliminary information suggests that Om Mehta was hit by a train while crossing the tracks,” said Additional Station House Officer Ratesh Kumar Ratna. He added that the investigation is ongoing, and further legal action will depend on a formal complaint from the family, which has yet to be filed.
Meanwhile, in Bhagalpur district, a man was killed after being struck by a goods train near Ekchari railway station in the early hours. The incident occurred around 3am on the Sahebganj railway section, according to Kahalgaon RPF Inspector Bhavesh Kumar. The victim has not yet been identified.
