Bihar Weather Alert: Thunderstorms, Lightning Expected in 38 Districts; Orange Alert in 27 Areas for Strong Winds

Patna: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for lightning and thunderstorms across 38 districts of Bihar on Tuesday, warning residents and farmers to stay alert and follow safety guidelines.
According to the IMD, an orange alert has been declared in 27 districts where winds may gust up to 60 km/h, while a yellow alert is in place for 11 other districts expecting winds around 40 km/h accompanied by rainfall.
Cyclonic Circulation Behind Unstable Weather
The current spell of unstable weather is due to an active cyclonic circulation over North and East Bihar, increasing atmospheric instability. The weather department has predicted that this disturbance will affect various parts of the state over the next 48 hours.
Three-Day Forecast: Thunderstorms and Light Rain
- May 21: Light rain with thunderstorms and gusty winds is likely in Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Saharsa, Purnia, Katihar, Buxar, Bhojpur, Rohtas, and Vaishali. A yellow alert has been issued for all these districts.
- May 22: Light rain is expected in Supaul, Araria, Madhepura, Saharsa, and Kishanganj, all under yellow alert.
- May 23: Bhagalpur, Banka, Jamui, Munger, and Khagaria are likely to experience rain. A yellow alert remains in effect.
Hail, Rain Hit Bhagalpur and Madhepura
Over the past 24 hours, heavy rain lashed Madhepura, while Bhagalpur experienced moderate rainfall accompanied by hail. Other districts including Darbhanga, Samastipur, Muzaffarpur, and Gopalganj received early morning showers. In contrast, Patna remained cloudy throughout the day but saw no rainfall.
Temperatures Drop Below 40°C Across State
The weather system has brought relief from intense heat, keeping maximum temperatures below 40°C in almost all districts. Rohtas recorded the highest temperature at 39.2°C, followed by Gaya at 37.5°C, Nalanda at 33.2°C, and Patna at a pleasant 32.5°C.
Advisory for Farmers and Residents
The IMD has urged farmers to avoid fieldwork during thunderstorms and to stay away from metallic equipment like mobile phones, tractors, and pump sets during lightning activity.
Residents are advised to stay indoors unless necessary and follow administrative instructions to ensure safety during extreme weather conditions.
