Bihar Women’s Asian Champions Trophy Rajgir 2024 matches rescheduled
Rajgir: The Asian Hockey Federation and Hockey India have announced a revised schedule for the Bihar Women’s Asian Champions Trophy in Rajgir, adjusting match timings to counter a significant insect infestation at the venue, particularly during evening games under floodlights.
The new schedule sees matches starting earlier in the day, with the first match kicking off at 12:15 PM IST, the second at 2:30 PM IST, and the final match at 4:45 PM IST. Previously, the matches were set to start later in the afternoon and run into the evening, with the last match originally slated for 7:30 PM.
The rescheduling follows consultations with the tournament’s organising committee and feedback from teams after several training sessions were disrupted by large swarms of insects attracted by the floodlights. The Rajgir stadium is surrounded by paddy fields, which are a natural habitat for insects, particularly during this season.
In response, the Bihar state government has implemented extensive environmental management measures at the venue, including drone operations, fumigation, and treatments that meet international standards. These protocols involve the use of various chemicals such as Cyphenothrin, Deltamethrin, and Cyfluthrin to minimise the insect population around the stadium.
Dr Dilip Tirkey, President of Hockey India, emphasised the importance of ensuring player safety and maintaining high standards for the tournament. “Our priority is the safety of players, fans, and everyone involved with this prestigious tournament,” said Tirkey. “This is a new venue for hockey, and we are committed to delivering a smooth and exciting experience, especially for the people of Bihar who have been eagerly anticipating this event.”
The rescheduled matches aim to ensure optimal playing conditions and mitigate any disruptions caused by the insect infestation, while allowing the tournament to proceed smoothly for players and spectators alike.
