Bihar’s Litchi Revolution: Shahi Litchi Geared Up for European Export
MUZAFFARPUR – Bihar’s Shahi Litchi, post-expansion in North and South India, is set to reach European markets. The National Research Center on Litchi, armed with the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, plans to export Shahi Litchi from South India to Europe, doubling farmers’ income.
Studies show that Shahi Litchi from South India is ideal for European export, especially during December. This expansion aims to enhance farmers’ income and make Shahi Litchi available in the market twice a year.
Dr. Bikash Das, Director of the National Research Centre on Litchi, notes the favorable demand for Shahi Litchi in Europe during Christmas due to the absence of other seasonal fruits. The Center plans to expand litchi cultivation in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka, taking advantage of the conducive winter climate for quality litchi production.
Coordination with local farmers and traders is crucial to ensuring the availability of Shahi Litchi in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh markets during the winter. Collaboration with the Indian Horticultural Research Institute and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research will provide technical support to farmers in South India for successful litchi orchard expansion.
