Bihar’s New Dress Code: Jeans and T-Shirts No Longer Allowed for Teachers
Patna: The Bihar Education Department has enforced a ban on teachers wearing jeans and t-shirts in government schools, mandating that they dress in formal attire. The directive, issued by Director cum Additional Secretary Subodh Kumar Chaudhary, also prohibits DJs, dancing, singing, and the making of reels within school premises. The decision follows reports of teachers participating in such activities, which were widely circulated on social media platforms like Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram.
Chaudhary addressed all District Education Officers (DEOs) in a letter, highlighting that these actions were detrimental to the school environment and should be immediately stopped. However, the department clarified that disciplined and culturally appropriate programs aligned with the education calendar on special days would still be allowed.
The order also stresses that casual attire, including t-shirts and jeans, will no longer be tolerated in schools. Teachers and staff must adhere to formal dress codes, and violations will result in disciplinary action. This follows a previous directive under memorandum number 394, dated August 28, 2019, issued by the General Administration Department, which outlined similar expectations for school behavior.
Previously, KK Pathak had introduced a similar dress code restriction in the education department offices, banning t-shirts and jeans and requiring formal dress for all officials working within the department.
