Bihar's TB Detection Efforts Recognized at National Level

New Delhi/Patna: On World Tuberculosis Day, Bihar’s efforts in tuberculosis detection received national recognition at a program held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. The Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare honored Suharsh Bhagat (IAS), Executive Director of the State Health Committee, Bihar, for the state’s exceptional performance in identifying asymptomatic TB cases during the 100-day TB Free India Campaign. Bihar’s systematic approach has played a significant role in strengthening the country’s fight against tuberculosis.

Launched on 7 December 2024, the campaign focused on targeted TB screening in high-risk populations across 10 districts, including Begusarai, Bhojpur, Samastipur, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Siwan, Gopalganj, Sitamarhi, East Champaran, and Katihar. Over 16.75 lakh individuals were screened, and 79,216 suspected cases underwent sputum testing with TrueNat CBNAT machines. Additionally, 17 ultra-portable handheld X-ray machines equipped with artificial intelligence were deployed in remote rural areas to enhance early detection.

Through these intensive efforts, 21,188 TB patients were identified and put on treatment, significantly improving Bihar’s public health response. The campaign’s success highlights the impact of advanced diagnostic tools and strategic interventions in combating tuberculosis.

Bihar’s commitment to TB elimination has also led to 344 panchayats across 21 districts being certified as TB-free based on six key indicators set by the Government of India. This national recognition reinforces the state’s dedication to proactive screening, timely treatment, and community health improvement.
