Bihar’s Transport Department Reports Record Revenue Growth, Surpassing Rs 3,684 Crore

Patna: Bihar’s Transport Department has achieved a record revenue collection of Rs 3,684 crore in the financial year 2024-25, marking a 10% increase from the Rs 3,351 crore collected in the previous year. The growth reflects the state’s increasing reliance on digital tax systems, strict enforcement of regulations, and a surge in vehicle registrations.

Transport Minister Sheela Kumari lauded the department’s performance, attributing the success to the dedication of its officers and employees. “This achievement is a testament to our team’s hard work and commitment. We are committed to making transport services more accessible, efficient, and transparent,” she said.

The increase in revenue coincides with a steady rise in vehicle registrations across Bihar. In 2024-25, a total of 13.82 lakh vehicles were registered, up from 13.19 lakh in the previous year—a growth of 5%. Motorcycles and scooters dominated the registrations, with 10.90 lakh new two-wheelers hitting the roads. Other categories saw significant increases, including 2,494 buses, 77,867 motor cars, and 74,426 e-rickshaws. Maxi cab registrations soared by 56% compared to the previous year.

Transport Secretary Sanjay Kumar Agarwal highlighted the department’s focus on technology-driven solutions. “Our revenue growth reflects a more transparent, efficient, and technology-enabled transport system. Effective tax collection, digital payment integration, and quick services have played a crucial role,” he said. The department has implemented strict monitoring mechanisms, real-time data analysis, and an online tax payment system to curb tax evasion and enhance compliance.

Since 2017-18, Bihar’s transport revenue has more than doubled from Rs 1,624 crore to Rs 3,684 crore, driven by measures such as tighter control on overloading, increased enforcement of transport laws, and the widespread adoption of digital transactions. Key revenue sources include registration fees, licensing, permits, trade tax, custom registration fees, and fines collected through an e-detection system.

With Bihar’s transport sector expanding rapidly, officials say they are committed to sustaining this momentum, ensuring a streamlined, technology-driven system that benefits both commuters and the state’s economy.
