Motihari: Two young girls drowned on Sunday after a boat carrying six children capsized in the Sikrahna river near Godhiya village in Motihari, East Champaran district of Bihar. The group of children had taken the boat out to play and bathe in the river when it lost balance and overturned.

The body of 10-year-old Lakshmi Kumari, a student of Class 6 and daughter of Hiraman Sahni, was recovered shortly after the incident. Search efforts, led by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), continue for 8-year-old Preeti Kumari, also Sahni’s daughter.

According to local authorities, the accident occurred while the children were jumping into the river from the boat. Four managed to swim to safety, but the two girls were swept away by the strong current.

Shikarganj police station officer Santosh Kumar and circle officer Aradhana Kumari visited the site, where a large crowd had gathered. The family of the missing child remained at the ghat, anxiously awaiting news as rescue operations continued through Monday.

The tragedy has cast a pall over the village, with local residents mourning the loss and expressing concerns about the safety of children playing unsupervised near the river.
