Bride Calls Off Wedding Upon Groom's Alleged Intoxication; Hostage Drama Ensues in Katihar

Patna: A wedding in Katihar took a tumultuous turn when the bride called off the marriage upon discovering the groom allegedly inebriated, sparking a chain of events that led to a hostage situation and demands for reimbursement of wedding expenses.

The groom, identified as Manjeet Chaudhary, son of Arvind Chaudhary from Sultanganj Adarsh Nagar village, arrived in Kursela block with his wedding procession to marry a girl from the Kursela area. However, the bride’s family was left in dismay when the procession failed to arrive on time at the Auditorium Building of Kursela.

Concerns heightened as news reached the bride’s family that the groom’s health had deteriorated en route, leaving him unconscious near Navgachia. Upon reaching the scene, the groom was found in an incapacitated state, prompting suspicion among the bride’s relatives.

Amidst inquiries, the groom’s family allegedly attempted to flee, leaving him behind. Eventually, the groom, along with some family members, was brought to the wedding venue in Kursela, where the bride, upon seeing his condition, adamantly refused to proceed with the marriage, accusing him of substance abuse.

Supporting her decision, the bride’s family stood firm, refusing to sanction the marriage. According to the bride’s brother, Sunil, upon reaching Navgachia, they found the groom intoxicated, and upon their arrival, the rest of the wedding party absconded.

In response, the groom claimed that he was unknowingly given a substance by friends during the procession, leading to his health deterioration. He denied any recollection of the events and expressed willingness to reimburse the wedding expenses, which, according to him, amounted to Rs 4.5 lakh, emphasizing that no dowry was involved.

The situation escalated as the bride’s family allegedly held the groom and his parents hostage in the auditorium building, demanding reimbursement for the wedding arrangements. Details regarding the resolution of the matter remain undisclosed.
