Patna: The Bihar State Disaster Management Authority (BSDMA) hosted a state-level sensitization program on disaster management at Bapu Sabhagar here on Sunday. The event brought together 4,300 rural community health coordinators from across the state, aiming to enhance their disaster response capabilities and underline their vital role in safeguarding communities.

The program was held under the guidance of the Chief Minister of Bihar, who also chairs the BSDMA, and chaired by the Vice Chairman, Dr. Udaykant, along with members P.N. Rai and Kaushal Kishore Mishra. Secretary Waris Khan welcomed participants, while Dr. L.B. Singh, Superintendent of Mahavir Cancer Institute and Research Centre, delivered an address emphasizing the health coordinators’ preparedness and their crucial societal role.

Participants were introduced to BSDMA’s disaster response initiatives, including programs like the Chief Minister School Safety Program, the Safe Swimming Program, and training in constructing earthquake-resistant homes. Films and presentations highlighted the importance of disaster preparedness, with specific focus on practical engagement at the grassroots level to protect rural communities.

Mock drills conducted by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) provided hands-on training in road accident prevention, drowning response, primary medical care, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The program also featured short films and expert sessions on mitigating the impact of disasters such as heat waves, cold waves, lightning, and road accidents.

Five rural health coordinators who demonstrated exceptional service during the Covid-19 pandemic and other disasters were honored during the event.

Dr. Udaykant, Vice Chairman of BSDMA, delivered the Chief Minister’s message, highlighting the essential role of health coordinators as the “fourth pillar” alongside parents, teachers, and spiritual guides. He commended their efforts and emphasized the state government’s commitment to disaster management.

Referencing Chanakya’s philosophy, Dr. Udaykant reiterated that rural doctors and healthcare providers are the first line of defense in villages, calling for government support to strengthen their capacities. “Bihar is moving towards becoming disaster-resilient,” he said, encouraging coordinators to actively engage in the state’s disaster prevention and response initiatives.

BSDMA member P.N. Rai stressed the importance of awareness and capacity-building among health coordinators, urging them to educate their communities on disaster preparedness. “The dream of the Bihar government is a safe and disaster-resilient state,” he said, encouraging collaboration and grassroots efforts to achieve this goal.

Dr. L.B. Singh reflected on Bihar’s progress under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s leadership, particularly in improving healthcare and disaster management. He lauded the Chief Minister’s vision and the transformative impact of initiatives aimed at empowering rural doctors and health workers.

As Bihar continues its journey toward development and safety under the Chief Minister’s leadership, events like this highlight the growing importance of grassroots involvement in building a disaster-resilient society.
